Barbara Alice Jensen-Schweighauser 80, of Pleasant Plains, died at 7:30 am, Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at her home. She was born April 3, 1944, in Philadelphia, PA to Dean and Alice Langel Jensen. She married Charles A. Schweighauser on June 14, 1997, and he survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Andrea (Kip) Leverton of Springfield, Deborah (Randy) Rogers-Flinn of Jacksonville and Jennifer Rogers (Craig Hocum) of Winona, MN from a previous marriage to Walter Rogers; one step-son, Robert Schweighauser of Chatham; ten grandchildren, Zachary (Leanna) Leverton, Andrew Leverton, Ethan Flinn, Jensen Flinn, Tim (Colleen) Flinn, Zach (Kristen) Flinn, Nadia Hocum, Hanalei Hocum and Amanda Schweighauser; one great grandchild, Dean Leverton and special cousins, Roy Franke of Mt. Vernon, IL and Connie (John) Schoenecker of St. Louis, MO.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one aunt, Aline Crawford.

Barbara was a member of Peter Cartwright United Methodist Church in Pleasant Plains.

She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education; English and Psychology from Eastern Illinois University and her Masters Degree in Human Development Counseling from Sangamon State University (now University of Illinois Springfield), and received her Certification in Secondary Education.

From 1977-1980 she worked for COPE - Adolescent Advancement Advocacy Program as Field Experience Coordinator. From 1980-1981, she worked for Sangamon State University as Continuing Education Coordinator; from 1981-1983 she served as Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Human Services and Sciences Center. From 1984-1992 she was the Assistant Director of Applied Study and Instructor of Experiential Learning. From 1993 she was the Director of Applied Studies/Instructor of Experiential Learning at the University of Illinois Springfield, retiring from this position in 2003.

Barbara was a member of Questers and served on the Board of Prairie Skies Library District.

A woman known for her bright smile and generosity, her legacy will be the footprint she left on this earth in the form of her family.

Memorial Gathering: 5-7 pm, Friday, May 3, 2024, at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield.

Memorial Service: 10 am, Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Peter Cartwright United Methodist Church – Pleasant Plains with Rev. Mark Milhouse officiating.

Private burial will be at a later date at Pleasant Plains Cemetery.
