Michael Leslie Akin, 81, of Springfield, IL, formerly of Mason City, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2024 at his home. He was born on March 6, 1943 to Edward B. and Frances B. Kuchan Akin. He married Verna M. Johnson Hood on May 14, 1984 and she survives.

Also surviving Michael are his two sons, Travis Akin of Edwardsville, IL, and Anthony (Jane) Akin of Maryville, IL; step-daughters, Karen (Bruce) Cox of Pleasant Plains, IL, Mary Gail (Bruce) Kwiecinski of Vernon Hills, IL; step-sons, William (Mary) Hood of Richmond, IL, and Robert (Pam) Hood of Columbus, OH; two grandchildren, Grace Akin and Sophie Akin; nine step-grandchildren; and a dear cousin, Gary (Marge) Crawford.

He was preceded in death by his parents and other beloved family members.

Michael grew up in Mason City and was a graduate of Mason City High School. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University while also playing on the university’s basketball team. He obtained his master’s degree in education at Bradley University. He was an educator at Beason and Manito High Schools for several years. He then worked at the Illinois State Board of Education where he served as Education Specialist in the department of recognition and supervision for 43 years.

Michael was an avid fisherman and duck and deer hunter. He enjoyed his yearly excursions to Canada, where he also enjoyed fishing and duck hunting. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and loved the responsibility of being an election judge for many years in his district.

Cremation will be provided by Staab Funeral Home – Springfield and Celebration of Michael’s Life will be announced at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
