The checkered flag waved the final time for Ronald Lee Smith, Jr., on May 3, 2024. Ron was born on March 8, 1956 in Springfield, Illinois to Ronald Lee Smith, Sr. and Margaret Josephine (Rogers).

Ron is survived by his pit crew: son, Ronald Lee Smith III of Blue Springs, Missouri; daughter, Dawn Renee Smith of Springfield, Illinois; two beloved grandchildren; sisters, Karen (Gary) Budd of Springfield, Illinois, Nina (Bill) Dvorak of Madison, Wisconsin; brothers, Robert (Channing) Smith of Peoria, Illinois, and Roger (Gail) Smith of Dawson, Illinois; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jon and Kevin Smith.

Ron spent most of his life in Springfield and was a 1974 graduate of Lanphier High School.

When not visiting racetracks or casinos, Ron was currently serving as Springfield Township Road Commissioner having first been elected to the position in 2017. Prior to the Township position, Ron retired from the Sangamon County Water Reclamation District.

Cremation will be arranged by Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Memorial Gathering: 9:00 - 11:00 am, Monday, May 13, 2024 at Staab Funeral Home - Springfield. A reception and celebration of Ron’s life will be announced afterward.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pediatric Resource Center, 1800 North Knoxville, Suite B, Peoria, IL 61603.
