Salvatore Madonia, 65, of Springfield, IL, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2025.

Anyone blessed to have known Sal knew what an incredibly special soul and human being he was. He was truly a one-of-a-kind person, who always saw the beauty in life and navigated it with the best sense of humor. He spread the joy and wisdom to all his friends and loved ones. He was the best of the best, and we all feel so lucky and honored to have known him and had him in our lives. He was the best husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin, neighbor, and friend you could ever hope to have.

His smile, joy and laughter were infectious and always put service and gratitude before all things. An active member of his community, he often helped to administer communion to the elderly and sick. He loved gardening and was an incredible cook, who loved to share his passion for the Italian cuisine. Most of all, he enjoyed the company of his friends, family and neighbors (and of course his much beloved dogs too). He had a special way of connecting and seeing the goodness in others, who quickly became friends. When you spoke with him, he had a way to make you feel heard and welcomed and could crack a joke in an instant that put a smile across your face. He was a kind and giving person who was always willing to comfort and help anyone in their time of need. After a long and dedicated career at the State of Illinois, he very much enjoyed and looked forward to his retirement that was cut way too short.

Sal had a deep faith in God and believed all things were possible and that we each have a unique journey to follow. Sal was our bright and shining star, who lit our path and helped us along our journey through life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is preceded in death by his parents Marianna and Andrea Madonia; his uncles, Jack Madonia and Frank Porrovecchio.

He is survived by his husband, David Donner; his sisters, Joann (Giovanni) Curcio and Catherine (James) Fidler; his nephews, Daniel (Linda) Curcio, Michael (Nicole) Curcio, David (Janice) Curcio and Robert (Laura) Murphy; his niece Cristina Curcio (fiancé Matt Pritzker); his great nieces Arianna, Ria, Piera, Mika and Selene; his great nephew Alessandro; his aunts, Maryann Porrovecchio and Lucia Ganci; his uncle Giuseppe Madonia and many beloved cousins.

Family and friends are welcome to celebrate the life of Sal at the Visitation and Mass.
