William Henry Herndon, Sr. 83, of Springfield, died at 10:28 am, Monday, May 6, 2024 at Springfield Memorial Hospital. He was born August 7, 1940 in Springfield to Jesse Leigh and Marie Maude Cox Herndon. He married Christine Janssen on October 5, 1963 and she preceded him in death on December 26, 2020.

Survivors include one daughter, Susan Elaine (Robert) Griffin of Springfield; two sons, William H. (Sarah Sever) Herndon, Jr. of FL and John Archer Herndon of West Milton, OH; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one sister, Sharon (John) Hill or Springfield; one brother Ronald (Shearl) Herndon of Springfield and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife and two sisters, Donna Richards and Elaine Herndon.

William was a US Air Force and Marine veteran.

He retired from Sangamon County after eighteen years as an accountant. Previously, he worked for CILCO.

William was the great-great-great grandson of Abraham Lincoln’s Law partner, William Henry Herndon.

Visitation: 5 - 7 pm, Sunday, May 12, 2024 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Funeral Service: 9:30 am, Monday, May 13, 2024 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where Military Honors will be conducted.
